It’s my parent’s anniversary today. They have been together for 33 years. I always thought they never had a chance for love because they had an arranged marriage. Growing up, I could see how different they were as people – mummy being the organized, intellectual and driven person, papa being the chilled out, logical and innovative one. I never understood how things worked. The ‘falling in love’ I saw in the movies obviously did not resonate in real life. No one serenaded anyone, or bought expensive gifts for each other, or dressed up and went on dates. We did go to family gatherings, celebrating festivals, temples, shopping and eating out but it was always the four of us, never the two of them. And as a child, I always loved that; I was present for everything.

I was five years old when I held my grandfather’s hand while he took me to school. My dad’s work took him away often, and that’s when I and my sister stayed at our grandparents for a while. His hand was huge but he clutched my tiny hand firmly yet gently. He held my schoolbag and water bottle in the other hand and we walked. He was tall and sturdy, very little hair on his head, but a pleasant long and smiling face. He wore trousers and a neatly tucked checked shirt with a black leather belt. He wore thick glasses in a big black frame and sometimes held a walking stick. On his wrist he had the object I was completely mesmerized with – his watch.

AuthorMy name is Lovya. I left home when I was 17, to study and pursue my dream of being an Engineer, which I am now! But my love for travel never parted with me and even as I grow older, I know there are places and adventures in the world which I have to see. It feeds my soul in a unique way. This blog is a means for me to share my travel stories and hear about your experiences. Categories
