Dubai is like a mirage in itself. You will never feel you are in the desert. The green palms, the Dubai Marina waterways, the tall skyscrapers, the busy roads all indicate otherwise. In the midst of all the fun in the city, I was missing the dramatic sand dunes and camels. So obviously I jumped at the idea of a desert safari!
When the chauffeur driven hummer finally arrived to pick us up on one afternoon, the adrenaline rush started to build. As we drove out of the city boundary, our car was already bursting with foot tapping Middle Eastern tunes. And then the driver took a turn and we were off the road, driving on no paths but just sand. We were joined by other SUVs and our troop headed towards the desert.
Huge towering dunes on which the SUVs climbed, there were no rules anymore. The Hummer went on the dunes upwards and downwards, almost a vertical incline and even sideways. At this time, the adrenalin was at it’s peak when our guide actually started to bash the dunes. Sand flew in all directions forming a cloud in which we immersed and then it landed on us like rain. We noticed the more excited we got, the more stunts our tour guide pulled out. If you have been on roller coasters, think of the best one you liked, this was better than that!
We stopped in the middle of the desert, where graciously our guide parked the hummer vertically. We walked on the dunes, took pictures and marveled at the beautiful golden desert in the light of the setting sun. We even saw a camel farm where the animals were standing in herds or lazying.
Our next stop was at the Safari camp where there were facilities for dirt biking and camel rides, both of which I had to do. Now I have been on camel rides since childhood, so this wasn’t the first time for me, but it is an experience no one should miss. You have to hold on tight when a camel stands up, front two feet first followed by the back. And it’s the opposite when they sit down. Trust me, if you have done it once, you will want to do it again and again!
We sat down to watch the first performance of the night, the Tanoura dance. The dancer was covered in bright colors and spun endlessly with foot tapping music, the highlight was when his attire was lit and he still kept swirling.
The loudest encouragement could be heard for the belly dancer who graciously immersed and smiled at the crowd. She was extremely talented and a vivacious performer who interacted with the crowd, even gathered a few laughs.
You could catch some dance moves in the video below.
At the end of it, I was dead tired and probably slept most of the way back to the hotel. And trust me, my dreams were full of the beautiful desert sunset and the camp setting with beautiful belly dancers and music. No wonder Arabian nights are magical!
